Pool Finishes Compared: Plaster Pebble and Quartz in San Diego

The Finish Sets the Color of Your Water

Most homeowners think of pool water as simply blue. In reality, the interior finish decides what shade of blue you see, how it shifts through the day, and how the pool feels underfoot. It is the largest surface in the entire design. For that reason, it deserves as much attention as the coping, the tile, or the deck.

In San Diego, where pools stay in use for most of the year, the finish also has to hold up to sun, salt air, and regular swimming. Three options lead the conversation: plaster, pebble, and quartz. Each one offers a different look and a different experience in the water.

Plaster: Clean, Classic, and Smooth

Plaster is a blend of white cement and marble dust, troweled smooth across the shell. It gives the bright, familiar water color that many people picture in a resort pool. The surface is gentle on bare feet, which matters in a pool where children and guests move around freely.

Plaster is also the most budget-friendly of the three. However, it is the softest. Over time it can show etching, staining, and surface wear, especially in pools with variable water chemistry. As a result, it usually needs refinishing sooner than the other options. For a design that prizes a crisp, pale look, it remains a lovely choice when it is well maintained.

Pebble: Natural Texture and Depth

Pebble finishes combine small river stones with cement. The result is a surface with natural variation, and the water takes on a deeper, more organic tone. Many of our clients love how pebble pairs with natural stone coping and softly planted landscapes.

Pebble is the most durable of the three, and it resists staining well. The tradeoff is texture. Even polished versions feel more tactile underfoot than plaster. In addition, a very rough finish can be uncomfortable on a shallow step or a tanning ledge. We often recommend a smaller, polished pebble for spaces where people sit, lounge, or play. If you are curious about how depth affects comfort, our guide to sizing a pool for how you swim covers the same principle.

Quartz: A Refined Middle Ground

Quartz finishes blend crushed quartz crystals into the plaster mix. They offer a smoother feel than pebble and far more color range than plain plaster. Soft grays, sandy neutrals, and deep midnight blues are all possible. In sunlight, the crystals add a subtle shimmer that makes the water look luminous.

Quartz is harder and more stain resistant than standard plaster. It also tends to hold its color longer. For many of our projects, it strikes the right balance between comfort and durability. It suits a modern, architectural pool with clean lines, where the surface should feel quiet and polished rather than rustic.

How We Match a Finish to the Whole Design

A finish should never be chosen alone. We consider it together with the waterline tile, the coping, the surrounding stone, and the light at different times of day. A deeper finish can make a compact pool feel more dramatic. A lighter one can make a small yard feel open and airy. For example, a dark quartz paired with pale travertine often creates a calm, mirror-like effect at dusk.

This is where our 3D renderings help. Before you sign, you can see how each finish reads against your own yard and your own palette. Tile choices belong in the same conversation, and our article on choosing pool tile explains how the two surfaces work together. Choosing With Confidence

There is no single best finish. The right answer depends on how you swim, how you entertain, and the mood you want the pool to carry. A family pool with a wide sun shelf may call for a smooth quartz. A naturalistic garden setting may call for pebble. A bright, crisp courtyard may suit plaster.
