How We Reimagined a Poway Backyard for Multigenerational Living

Some of the most rewarding backyards we design are the ones that have to work for everyone. In Poway, we recently reimagined a backyard for a family living across three generations under one roof. Grandparents, parents, and young children all needed the space to feel like theirs, and the yard had to hold all of it without feeling crowded or compromised. The result is a calm, connected outdoor environment that proves multigenerational living and luxury design belong together.

The Challenge: One Backyard, Three Generations

The family came to us with a common tension. The grandparents wanted a quiet place to sit and enjoy the garden. The parents wanted a space to entertain and unwind. The children needed room to play safely and freely. On paper, those goals can feel like they pull against one another.

Our job was to reconcile them into a single, cohesive design. For that reason, we started not with features but with people. We mapped how each member of the family moves through a typical day, then let those patterns shape the layout. As a result, the finished yard serves everyone without feeling divided.

Designing Distinct Zones That Still Feel Connected

The heart of the solution was zoning. Rather than one large open space, we created a series of connected areas, each with its own purpose. A resort-style pool and lounge anchor the center. A shaded dining area sits close to the kitchen. A quiet garden nook gives the grandparents their retreat, and a soft, open lawn gives the children room to run.

Crucially, these zones flow into one another instead of standing apart. Sightlines stay open, so a grandparent in the garden can still watch the children at play. This is the same principle behind designing around the way you actually live, where the layout follows real life rather than a template.

Safety and Comfort for Every Age

Multigenerational design has to consider mobility and safety without ever looking clinical. We used gentle grade transitions and wide, slip-resistant pavers so the space is easy to navigate for both a toddler and an older adult. In addition, we planned clear, well-lit pathways between the zones for confident movement after dark.

Around the pool, we integrated a tanning ledge and generous steps that welcome young children and older swimmers alike. These choices protect the family while keeping the design refined. Comfort and beauty were never treated as separate goals.

A Pool and Lounge the Whole Family Enjoys

The pool needed to work for cannonballs and quiet floats in equal measure. We designed a clean, architectural shape with a shallow shelf for the kids and grandparents, and enough open water for the adults to swim and relax. A spillover spa adds warmth for the cooler evenings that Poway can bring.

Just beyond the water, a covered lounge gives the family a place to gather in shade. Whether it is a birthday party or a slow Sunday, the pool zone becomes the natural center of gravity for the household. It is the feature everyone shares, which is exactly what a family backyard should offer.

Why the Design Process Made the Difference

A project this layered can only succeed with a clear plan. Before construction began, we walked the family through a full 3D rendering of the finished design. In other words, they could see how every zone connected and how the whole yard would feel long before we built it.

That clarity mattered even more with several people to please. Everyone could point to their part of the space and feel confident it was accounted for. This is why we show the design before anything is signed, so the final result reflects the whole family, not a compromise.

One Backyard That Grows With the Family
